    Edublogs.be

    Ik stel u met enige trots mijn nieuwste blogproject voor: Edublogs.be.

    Het idee is eigenlijk begonnen met de noodzaak tot opdelen van mijn eigen weblog die een allegaartje werd van posts over internet, onderwijs, Gent en vakanties. Voor de categorie Gent heb ik in de vorm van Gent.blogt een mooi alternatief gevonden. Maar ik zat nog wat verveeld met mijn onderwijs categorie. Combineer die zoektocht met de vraag van een paar collega’s die een blog willen schrijven, maar er zelf geen willen opstarten, en zo belanden we bij dit project.

    Edublogs.be is een groepsblog over, voor en door het onderwijs in Vlaanderen. Dat wil zeggen dat zowel leerlingen, leerkrachten, ouders als projectmedewerkers welkom zijn om mee te bloggen. Er is plaats voor alle soorten ervaringen, bevindingen, actualiteit en internationale projecten.

    De eerste auteur van het edublogging team heeft vandaag al een post geschreven. Niemand minder dan Ine Dehandschutter, u ook bekend van Photoblog, vertelt over haar SnowBlog project. Het is een mooi onderwijsproject, dat niet binnen onze traditionele schoolgebouwen plaats vind, maar wel aandacht verdient.

    Het zal geen blog worden met een dagelijks nieuws karakter, maar een ervaringsblog. Er zijn zoveel verhalen die de moeite waard zijn, maar nooit een plaats vinden. De blog is in dat opzicht ook een beetje een experiment. Ik heb er geen idee van of het moeilijk is om verhalen te bundelen. Of het lukt kan u zelf ontdekken op Edublogs.be.

    iPod funeral

    Yesterday my iPod stopped functioning. I was listening to an old IT Conversations show with Chris Pirillo and paused the player just before going into a meeting. Afterwards, I tried to start it, but it did not respond. That happened to me before, but this time the device was really dead. It might sound stupid but I felt so sad about it.

    I have it since October last year. Only 5 months later I need to send it back to Ireland for repair. There’s three things I don’t like about sending it back:

    • It needs to go in the original box. Well, that’s quit a big box for such a small device, and it’s gonna be more expensive then a small box.
    • You don’t get your own iPod back. They’ll send you “something” in return. Could be used, could be new. But I want mine!
    • The confirmation letter was in French. Good for me, like all Belgians I’m triple-lingual, but my Viking doesn’t understand a word of it. My language option was Dutch, so I want my confirmation in Dutch as well. Don’t give me the option if there isn’t one. As a side note: it took Apple a few weeks after release until they added Dutch to the Belgian Apple iTunes store as well.

    The good thing is that nothing of my data will be lost. I didn’t have space on any hard disk for a backup, so I never wrote data on it that could I miss. But I did invest some time to add CDs to the iPod. Don’t really feel like doing that again before we buy our media center like planned. I’m not sure I will ever add those CDs again to the iPod. To be honest, on average I only listen to 10% of my music. Most of the time I’m totally into podcasting.

    Not sure I would buy the device again or recommend it. If I pay €400 for such a device, I expect to get my own property back.

    In the mean time, I don’t know what to do. I have three options, use my P900 mobile, use my Creative Nomad Jukebox3 device which I use for recording (too big), or live without it. I was definitely addicted to my poddie.

    Technology surfing

    I’ve been very busy last weeks. Work? Oh no, “hobby projects” you know. I got to play with WordPress 1.5 thoroughly, and (a bit) unfortunately that kept me away from playing with other technologies. But hey, I fell in love with this software. It’s a really nice tool.

    Some things to mention:

    The Dashboard:

    • The “dashboard” option is the place to start in your own weblog tool. In the latest activity box, you’ll get handy information on the latest posts, scheduled entries, comments and blog stats.
    • A word on those blog stats. Here you get an overview of: the number of posts, comments and categories. The nicest things are the incoming links who are delivered by a Technorati search on your weblog.
    • That dialog box is just a small thing. The space left can be filled up with… RSS feeds. On Gent.blogt we added two RSS feeds from our partnering newspaper. I’m thinking of filling up Smetty.be with some specific RSS feeds from Technorati, Pubsub and Feedster.

    Creative Commons struggle

    Doug Kaye, the producer of IT Conversations , is questioning his Creative Commons license.

    The reason he mentions: “They (Advertisers), need to know how many people are hearing their promotional announcements, and for that reason I need statistics: counts of the number of listeners. … But if you copy an IT Conversations recording and host it on your own web site (as currently allowed by our Creative Commons license), we won’t be able to include your listener counts in our totals.”

    And further: “You don’t let others just copy and re-host your complete web pages; you want readers to come to your site to read what you’ve written. Google page ranks and all that. It’s no different with audio programming.”

    This is an interesting case for me. In the comments, people advise different things. This goes from suggesting a “derivation of the CC license”, “understanding” and the opposite “I’ll start removing my links to IT Conversations if you restrict the licenses to non-CC”.

    I already wrote about my choice for non-CC.

    Two simple reasons: I want to know what happens with my content (page ranks, advertising) and I consider my blog as a book where the posts are the pages.

    CC license is great, but people shouldn’t make it a religion.

    Update 06/03:
    There seems to be “a license designed specifically to permit sampling”.

    Partnership De Standaard

    Gent.blogt kondigde vandaag officieel het partnership met De Standaard aan. Voor zover ik weet is het de eerste keer, zeker in ons land, dat een krant dit soort partnership sluit met een weblog.

    Het samenwerken verloopt in twee richtingen: Gent.blogt zal bij actualiteitsnieuws een partnerlink leggen naar regio artikels van DS Online (die hierdoor door iedereen gratis gelezen kunnen worden), De Standaard zal op zijn beurt de laatste vijf titels van Gent.blogt overnemen op de regiopagina. Het uitwisselen van nieuws zal dus langs beide kanten gebeuren.

    De partnerlink was al langer zichtbaar op de blog, dus het zal voor velen zeker geen verassing zijn. We krijgen trouwens wel vaker de vraag waarom het De Standaard is geworden, en niet De Morgen?

    Er zijn twee belangrijke factoren in dit verhaal. De mensen van De Standaard hebben actie ondernomen en hun intensie tot samenwerken meermaals duidelijk gemaakt. Zo een uitgestoken hand ga je niet weigeren.

    Zelf heb ik mij vaak geërgerd aan de traagheid waarmee Vlaamse kranten met internet en nieuwe technologieën in het algemeen omgaan. In die zin was het een aangename verassing om te horen dat de top van De Standaard achter een samenwerking staat met een weblog.

    Ten tweede is er nog wat ik zou willen omschrijven als “de i.-factor”. Never underestimate the power of i.

    Minstens even belangrijk… er zijn nog letters in ons truken-alfabet. Hou vooral de L. in de gaten.
