Samar
Last year I (Smetty the yacht spotter) took some pictures of the Rising Sun. Today, I spotted this little beauty, named “Samar” (Click on the pictures to enlarge or check the Samar yacht photo group on Flickr).
* Add your own Samar picture to the Samar Flickr group *
The first thing I want to know: “who is the owner and what are the specs?”.
* Google, Google on the net *
…the yacht, built at Devonport Management Limited’s yacht building arm Devonport Yachts, was built for a Kuwait-based millionaire businessman who is a senior figure in a company which specialises in the engineering and financial sectors...
…the yacht will be called ‘Samar’, after the owner’s daughter.
At nearly 77 metres (253ft), it is the biggest yacht to be built in the UK since the 125 metre Royal Yacht Britannia more than 50 years ago.Boasting five decks, accommodation for 12 passengers, 20 crew and four staff, a glass staircase running through the centre of the vessel, a fully-fitted gymnasium, a steam room and hot and cold pools on the upper deck, the boat is the epitome of luxury.
I see this family scene: “hun, I want to do some shopping, can we go there with our yachtie, do you want me to take the snoozy woozy little boat or shall we fly today?” The epitome of luxury. Mmm…

Info by Thomas: “The “Samar” arrived Oslo yesterday and it’s still docked at Rådhusbrygga, witch is the finest harbour in Oslo.
This picture is taken from my office at 6th floor a few hundred metres away. Sadly some nature in the front, but the view is amazing!
The cruiseship behind is Royal Caribbean’s “Jewel Of The Seas“, witch is a 90090 gross tonne cruiseship and in front-left corner you can spot the three masts of “Christian Radich” witch is a 80 year old sail wessel, famous from the movie Cinemiracle.

I spotted the Samar when having dinner in a restaurant last evening (13/8/06) at about 7.30 pm in the port of IJmuiden. What an amazing yacht!!! With even a helicopter on deck! Amazing! No doubt that whoever the owner maybe, it is a welfortuned man, haha!
Do you guys have any idea what the man is doing in (Northern) Europe? I mean….the weather is nog that good at the moment so when the yacht would be mine i should probably be cruising somewhere a tropical island…..
Spotted this beauty in IJmuiden last night at 08:00 PM. It was entering the North Sea channel via the locks.
The ship itself is a beauty but the helicopter really sets it apart. Having only lifeboats on a ship is sooooo 1999 😉
Hey all
The Samar is a really beautiful boat!
I was so lucky to see her in Copenhagen, Denmark a couple of weeks ago.
But I wonder if any of you guys know what the military looking boat is called.
In Copenhagen it layed right next to The Samar.
Maybe it is a following boat?
samar, nice and easy landed at amsterdam harbour august 14th noon; what a ship almost as big as the ocean steamer next to it.
I spoke to some crew members today. They can not tell when they leave till one hour before departure. The next stop is secret. (could be Antwerp or Zeebrugge) Headed to the South of Europe… Or just back to England of course.
The Boat is now in Amsterdam….
There is no doubt – it is Mr Alghanim. There’s no ‘but’ about it. Friend of a friend of a friend works for him and is on the boat.
… the boat is still in Amsterdam. Sinds two days… (48.)
people are going in and out all the time. several taxi and mini busses came by. some kind of party is going on.
I was also overthere and spoke to the gards. There is an party going on and there were braught fresh flowers. I think it has something to do wit a businessdeal. Is it Possible that the Alghanim familie bought A dutch compagny. Perhaps Ahold? I live on the Sumatrakade, and you Francis?

@Amsterdam: Yes, this is a Belgian weblog and I do speak dutch. But this English blogpost about the Samar has been tracked by a few hundred people every day from Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Finland, Estonia etc. I could follow the track of the Samar because all of them wrote English. Please let’s go on in English so they can understand what’s going on now in Amsterdam. Thx. /Smetty.
What a ship! And wonderfull to see what a post in english can lead to…
Edwin
The owner is Kutayba Alghanim, of Alghanim Industries, and yes he does have a daughter called Samar, and two sons one called Waleed and one called Omar. Forbes reckons him to be worth 1.5billion US
I spoke to Guests of the ship today. There bound to set sail to Birmingham tomorrow and then they go to France.
Do you know why they are here? Is it just for the fun or is it for Business. The ship is still at Java Island here in Amsterdam. At the passenger Terminal is now also the cruiceship Costa Atlantica again. This ship is very often here and it is nice to see it turn during its arrival. I can see that from out of my bedroom. But this ship arrieves very early during the night.
Last night I saw them partying on the vessel. Party went on for several hours. I live nearby and some people leave at 4 am
Chopper just took off at 14.21. Guess they needed restocking of booz after last night’s party!
I was wondering if they can do that like that in The Netherlands….Or would they have special permission for that? I work in the tower office above the PTA and saw it too…
15:13, chopper is back….
Get a life & get back to work!!
footage of the chopper taking off..

Last night again party on the vessel. There were women brought in by several taxicabs. Party went all night long.
Samar due in 1000hrs Friday at Gunwharf Quays Portsmouth apparently. Can’t wait, so excited to see this yacht in the flesh. Definately taking the kids down to see her, 3hr drive but it’ll be worth it.
You’re pathetic Jimbo!
Take no notice of him Jimbo, prob jealous, I’ll prob make my way down also, could meet up for a coffee the kids will keep each other company.
Definately, we could make a day of it! Or two hahahahahahaha! I’ll be down quite early to see her come in, trembling at the thought, she’s quite something! See you there! Don’t forget you’re camera!! Hahahahaha!
Watch this space for pictures people!!!! Can’t wait!
And I do think I detect a hint of jealousy dark raver! Hahahahaha
Samar is still in Amsterdam at the Java Island. I have taken several pictures of this beautiful yacht. The crew was busy positioning huge plants on board.
According to one of the crew members (a deckhand) it will sail soon to Petersburg when the owner wants to do it. Another crew member (a PA) told me that the yacht is chartered.
We saw her take off this afternoon at 14.00 hours and she is still not back. Must be off to another port. Wouldn’t mind to take a look on board…
Just by coincidence I saw this ship leaving IJmuiden (The Netherlands), when it went out to sea. Fortunately I could take a picture: Samar photo on Kwebble.
It’s now in Portsmouth at Gunwharf Quays
Ik zou graag willen weten wat “Samar” in Sinese tekkens is. Het is voor een tattau en het is nogal dringent! Geen dank.
Here she is at the Gunwharf in Portsmouth this morning..

I was collecting my daughter from her sailing trip and the Samar is moored right next door to the yacht she spent the last 5 days on.
Hare is my daughter claiming ‘ownership’ ….

I guess you all know already it is owned by Kutayba Alghanim.
(Joint 562nd richest man in world according to Forbes.)
He is estimated to be worth about 1.4 Billion dollars. The yacht is named after his daughter Samar.
There is a picture of the owner as featured on the Daniel E Greene (portrait artist) website….

Not to my taste! But what the hey, I am not a billionaire, so what do I know?

‘Project 54’ is an even bigger design at 84 metres length and will be Burgundy in colour!
Due to complete next year.
Sorry. Should have read 82 metres.
The yacht is currently in Portsmouth – docked at Gun Wharf Quays. The owner must be grabbing a Starbucks and checking out the Marks & Spencer sale!!!!
At around 5pm it seems that was the daughter carrying her dog around waving to someone in one of the bars in the Gun Wharf Quays
seen in “gunwharf quays” today while in tiger tiger……wow some boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw her berth at gunwharf, she was in the way so I.O.W cat had to depart round north of hulk moorings. When we got back the crew were scrubbing her down so I got my coach broom out and gave ‘Our Lady Pamela’s back end a good seeing to. Tried my best but I couldn’t make her shine like the ‘Samar’
Saw SAMAR at 11/08/2006 in Oslo first time. Now I have a new love 😉
Saw it at Gunwharf today – what a sad lot we are to have any interest in this global warming trophy. In 20 years we will all look back with anger upon these people that have caused such environmental catastrophe.
Saw Samar at Gunwharf today, wicked yacht, truely awesome, I’ve never felt so poor in my life! So, Jimbo, did you get together with Lilly? If so, what a way to go man, pulling on a yacht spotter site!!
J WILL BE WORK VERY HARD AND J’LL BUY SAMAR FROM OWNER. THE YAHT WILL BE CALLED ”POLONIA” HA HA J SEND MA SMILE FROM POLAND!
Saw it in pompey (gunwarf quays) today, what an awesome boat, got a few pics too, I want it !!!
